                                                                                                               GOLF INITIATIVES
All students, regardless of course or academic performance are invited to participate in all our golf programs.
1. BACKGROUND & INTRODUCTION

A few years ago the group considered creating a scholarship or bursary for students but given the narrow reach and the complexities of administering the program, we settled on a different course. Because we have historically raised our funds  through an annual golf tournament and because most participants played some type of sport on school teams and have a soft spot for the value of athletic involvement, it was agreed in principle within our Group and with teacher reps, that a golf-focused program  would be a good idea.

3. OBJECTIVES OF GOLF 4 JARVIS

1. Enhance and diversify the “JCI Experience” for students by providing a meaningful exposure to golf.
2. Add value to the school's PhysEd programs
3. Excite an interest in the game of golf and its lifelong personal benefits.
4.Expose students to employment opportunities in the golf industry and introduce them to relevant post-secondary educational programs.
6.. Assist those who have interest in and aptitude for the game (especially those who may not have the financial ability)) to participate on a JCI Golf Team or even enter  City of Toronto golf events.

5. STATUS-CURRICULUM LESSONS:

The group procured teaching plans from Golf Canada  to facilitate the addition of golf to the regular PhysEd curriculum for male and female students.

See below for more details!

               4. STATUS-CLINICS

The spring of 2018 was to stage a 3rd annual clinic at Don Valley Golf Course. The clinics involve:

-   group lesson/clinic led by a CPGA Pro
-   practice range session overseen by the Pro
-   an accessible, shareable video of each individual’s swing uploaded to the web (TBD)
-   a Putting Contest and  Closest to the Flag Contest.

Because of exam scheduling and year end activities, the clinc has been postponed to the spring of 2019.

To support the first clinic, we  designed and supplied simple marketing posters to draw attention to clinics. An example follows...
IN CLASS 1. Following our advocacy, Golf Ontario staff recently conducted a day of lessons for several PhysEd classes at Nelson Mandela Park public school, which is an important feeder elementary school for JCI. The day was very successful and we have offered to fund the Golf in Schools package if the school decides it would to commit to adding regular golf lessons to their curriculum. It remains for us to follow this initiative up. It is harder to get schooll adminstartion to act than we might have thought.
IN CLASS 2. We coordinated and participated directly in a day of Golf Ontario lessons at Jarvis on May 17th 2017. The weather was great so everything happened outside on the JCI field. There were 4 classes of PhysEd students treated to some fun and learning and a little practice. Male and female students participated. I saw a lot of happy kids learning something new and met a few who may show some inyteerest in learning more.  The students were impeccably polite and outwardly thankful for the opportunity. Maybe they were coached a bit by their great teachers, but it was wonderful nonethelss to have had some conversations one on one.   The "Thank You" card received was really pretty touching as were the group "thanks". It may take a while, but one day JCI will field a golf team!!  Another day is targeted for the spring of 2019.
6. STATUS - CAREER OPPORTUNITIES.

Contact has been made with Georgian College and Humber College each of which offers programs in golf management, There are diploma and Business Degree programs at each school. Materials have been supplied to the Guidance Department. Both Colleges have offered to speak to teachers and students at the school at appropriate and agreed times.

Go to  the Links page to get access to info on the Georgian and Humber Programs.
7.  STATUS - GOLF TEAM & COMPETITION.
Down the road...when JCIers are more "into the game"...we have offered to underwrite the costs of one or more students to participate in one or more City of Toronto junior golf events and to subsidize a Jarvis Golf Team Entry to the annaul TDSB series of intercollegiate tournaments.

We would enable student participation by a combination of  greens fee payment, transportation arrangements/subsidy, golf shirts (and possibly some equipment).

Promoting the ideal of competing with colleagues in the name of JCI makes a lot of sense. Other downtown schools (such as Malvern, Northern, North Toronto and Humberside) participate;
                                        WHY NOT JARVIS??

A business teacher has agreed to be the staff champion in the fall of 2019.
