                                                                                              EQUIPMENT PROCUREMENT
This iniative was developed after finding that the introduction of golf to JCI students was a little more challenging than we first thought. We realized it could well take several years to get to the point of having sufficient interest and playing ability to actually field a Jarvis Golf Team. So rather than flogging a horse that wasn't yet ready to win the race, we decided - in discussions with the PhysEd department - to try and help in other ways. That led to an agreement to subsidize/pay for necessary equipment. There are two general targets: 1.  To help get "day to day" equipment (balls, bats, nets etc) to the PhysEd department. 2. To perhaps "top up" the school's program to equip a modern weight/training/fitness centre! All very exciting.
GENERAL EQUIPMENT : SEE ABOVE PHOTO!

We considered buying equipment directly and just giving it to the school. We thought part of the benefit of doing so would be that  we could negotiate some "most favoured nation pricing" with selected suppliers. We started on this path, but discussions with suppliers, JCI staff and TDSB officials took us to the conclusion this was NOT the way to go. First, there would be potential liability of us becoming a supplier. Second, suppliers already selling to TDSB schools have contracted prices which they could not undercut for us. Third, there would be no way to take advantage of potential tax benefits of our gift.
                                                   So...

Each year the school has provided a list of what equipment was needed.  A selection of volleyballs, nets and equipment carts; some baseball gloves. badminton gear, an air compressor and even some bathing caps are now in inventory for the students.  Stanchions for nets and even uniforms. We look forward to the next order soon!

We invested $1,500 from our fund in late 2017 and another $3,000
             in the fall of 2018.

The cash flow is as follows. The cheque is made in favour of the TDSB. It gets sent to JCI with notes regarding the gift's purpose and related restrictions.

JCI agrees to the gift and  forwards the cheque to TDSB*. They hold the funds "in trust" for the JCI PhysEd department, who can draw it down as it choses to purchase equipment. Purchases are happening as this is written. Both the 2017 and 2018 funds were  based on  desired/needed equipment supplied to us by PhysEd.

To emphasize...the stuff that is aquired is                    decided by the school...not us!

WEIGHT TRAINING & FITNESS ROOM AND EQUIPMENT

The school has - after several years of saving $ and fundraising - is going  to establish a sophisticated weight and training room. Staff have raised of order,  $30,000 for the equipment. At the same time, internal discussions have freed up room space. The TDSB has agreed to allow the procurement of equipment tp proceed.

We see this as a "top up" opportunity for the group over time. We may try to reach out to suppliers to see what we can do regading some "supra-normal" price and service offers for futuer equipment addirions. The entire "Greater JCI Community ("JCIC") could benefit from this type of well-equipped facility.

So...we will try to find partners as well as a few of our dollars!

The photo below is THE ACTUAL WEIGHT ROOM at the school. Great job done!!

Jarvis Collegiate Institute          December 2017  $ 2018           RE Funds for JCI PhysED Programs
"A cheque accompanies this letter in the amount of $1500. It is payable to the Toronto District School Board (TDSB), but is for the EXCLUSIVE USE of JCI, and in particular, the Men’s and Women’s PhysEd Departments. The Funds are being provided to enable the purchase of athletic equipment which JCI staff has identified as being desirable and necessary.....

The objective of this monetary gift is to help JCI continue and enhance the delivery of physical education, sports programming including skill development and enable increased participation by JCI students in sports and athletic activities.

The only condition on this gift is that JCI inform us, post facto, of the equipment purchased and of the PhysEd Departments’ future equipment needs so as to allow us to plan for future gifts.

This gift is in addition to the provision of periodic golf clinics, which we intend to continue to offer to JCI students this spring and into the future...."
